Open Space: Trippie Redd
Although Trippie Redd has recently blown up in Atlanta’s rap scene, he still reps him hometown of Canton, Ohio, which he says is one of the most dangerous small cities in America.

“I love Ohio, don’t get me wrong that’s where I’m from, I die for Ohio,” he told MASS APPEAL in our latest episode of Open Space. “But they really don’t support or fuck with people until they get the fuck out,”

Recently Redd has been making waves on the internet by not just rapping but singing his heart out on his viral hit songs such as “Romeo and Juliet.” And despite what everyone thinks about this current generation of rappers, Redd makes it clear that he is trying to be nobody but himself.

“I go into the studio and I think Trippie Redd and I just do whatever comes to my head. If I hear a beat, that I think is timeless, I’m going to do a groundbreaking record.”

And when asked about his influences, Redd mentioned Lil Wayne, T-Pain and the rock band Kiss.

“I was definitely in tune with it. I liked Psycho Circus, that shit is hard. I try to mix alternative rock, R&B, rap and pop in one,” he told MASS APPEAL. “We the new pop basically, hip hop is becoming the new pop.”

And Redd is truly one of hip hop’s biggest rockstars today. Check out the full Open Space video above where Redd talks about his long term goals, the importance of the number 14 and how his late brother, who was also a rapper, affected his own career.

Rhythm Roulette: Rahki
With Grammy Awards already under his belt already, Rahki is one of Top Dawg Entertainment’s most trusted producers. The Minneapolis-born producer was the man behind “i,” one of K-Dot’s biggest singles, for which he sampled a ’70s Isley Brother’s track, “That Lady.” Besides making beats for other members of TDE such as Ab-Soul, Rahki has produced for Eminem, 50 Cent, Travis $cott and more.

Rahki’s ear for samples is so good, MASS APPEAL had to put him to the test in our latest episode of Rhythm Roulette. We met up with Rahki at Ameoba Music in L.A. where he tied on the blindfold and picked three records from the shop’s clearance section. His picks were random as hell, including a chorus recording, orchestral music, and one album whose cover gave him “Illuminati type of vibes.”

It seems those left-field selections posed just a small challenge for the talented beat-maker. What he came out with in the end is a banger. Check out Rahki at work in our latest Rhythm Roulette video above.

Daily Operation: Do The Right Thing Premieres (June 30, 1989)
June 30, 1989, brought the release of writer and director Spike Lee’s film ‘Do the Right Thing.’ Lee also played one of the movie’s protagonists—the Jackie Robinson jersey-wearing, pizza delivering Mookie.

The film took place on a block in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood during the hottest day of the year. It explored issues of racial tension, gentrification, police brutality and immigration in New York City. It was filmed entirely on Stuyvesant Ave. between Quincy St. and Lexington Ave. Its budget was $6.5 million.
Lee had already made the films ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ and ‘School Daze,’ as well the “It’s Gotta Be the Shoes” commercial with Michael Jordan.
The ensemble cast included Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. It was also the film debut of Rosie Perez, who danced through the opening credits sequence to Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power.”
“Fight the Power” went No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart and Lee staged a protest march for the music video.
When Lee’s film was released some film critics worried ‘Do the Right Thing’ would incite violence. Others recognized that it was the best film of the year. Others, recognized it was the best film of the year.
‘Do the Right Thing’ only received Oscar nominations, when recognizing Lee’s Best Original Screenplay and a Best Supporting Actor nod for Danny Aiello’s portrayal of Sal. The big winner at the Academy Awards that year was ‘Driving Miss Daisy.’

‘Do the Right Thing’ was the film that Barack and Michelle Obama saw on their first date.
